VIA Credit Union

Via Credit Union was formed in 1936 by a group of teachers and administrators from the Marion Community School System under the Federal Credit Union Act passed by Congress in 1934 under the name Marion, Indiana, Public School Employees Federal Credit Union. The credit union started with 38 charter members, less than $100 in assets and was operated out of the home of the (volunteer) Treasurer until 1965. In 1956, the field of membership was extended to include all other school systems in Grant County. In 1965, with nearly 1 million dollars in assets, the credit union rented its first space and hired its first full-time employee. In 1972, the credit union built its first office on Bradner Avenue in West Marion. In 1983, the Blackford County Public Employees Federal Credit Union merged with Via Credit Union. Branch offices were established in Hartford City (1984), in South Marion (1990), in Gas City (1995) and on West 2nd Street in Marion (1996). In 2003, a new administrative center and new south Marion branch were constructed on the site of the old south Marion branch and in 2008, the Bradner office and the west Marion branch were consolidated into a new building at the site of the old west branch. Via Credit Union reached $100 million in assets April 1999 and passed the $200 million asset mark in May 2008. In 2007, Via Credit Union converted to a state-chartered credit union. As a result, Via Credit Union was able to expand its field of membership to anyone living or working in Blackford, Grant, Madison or Miami County along with their immediate family. After the approval of the state-charter and enlarged field of membership, a name change was in order because the name Marion School Employees Credit Union presented a barrier to people believing they are eligible to join the credit union. A naming committee made up of members, volunteers, staff and management was formed to select two names that were placed before the membership for a vote. The name VIA received the most votes and became the new name of the credit union. Via suggests the credit union is a "pathway" for members to reach their financial goals in life. Via is a way to get from point A to point B in ones life. Success Takes Direction and it is Via Credit Unions goal to assist members in making wise financial choices.
